Actual lifespan depends on installation quality, usage, climate, and how well the system has been maintained, so treat the result as a planning estimate rather than a diagnosis.
What if I don't know the exact install date of a system?
Use your best guess. For water heaters, the manufacture date is usually encoded in the serial number on the unit's label. For a roof or HVAC system, your home inspection report, closing documents, or a call to the installing contractor can often pin down the year. A rough estimate is still more useful than no estimate.
